Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Sample Test

The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test battery that is designed to measure your aptitudes at this time in your life. It consists of ten short individual tests covering Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, General Science, Auto & Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, Numerical Operations and Coding Speed. When you take the ASVAB prior to enlisting, not only do you receive scores on each of these individual tests, but several individual test results are combined to yield three academic composite scores: Verbal, Math and Academic ability.

Sample items are provided here for each of the ten ASVAB tests. For each test, read the example which has been answered for you and make sure you understand it. Then, answer the sample items that follow. To do so, select the correct answer from the alternatives provided. Click on the response that best answers your question. You will receive feedback as you move through the sample test. This sample ASVAB is provided for career guidance only. Success in answering these questions does not imply any acceptance or ability in the administration of the actual ASVAB required for Army recruits.

General Science
The General Science test consists of 25 items encompassing both physical and biological sciences.

Arithmetic Reasoning
The Arithmetic Reasoning test consists of 30 problems, similar to those below, for you to solve.

      If 12 men are needed to run four machines, how many men are needed to run 20 machines? (C. is the correct answer)

         A. 20.
         B. 48.
         C. 60.
         D. 80.

Word Knowledge
The Word Knowledge test is designed to measure your understanding of the meanings of words. The test consists of 35 underlined words. From the four choices, select the word or phrase meaning most nearly the same as the underlined word.
Example:

      Small most nearly means (D. is the correct answer)

         A. sturdy.
         B. round.
         C. cheap.
         D. little.

Paragraph Comprehension
The Paragraph Comprehension test consists of 15 items measuring ability to obtain information from written passages. In this section, you will find one or more paragraphs of reading material followed by incomplete statements or questions. Read each paragraph and select one of the lettered choices that best completes the statement or answers the question.
Example:

      From a building designer's standpoint, three things that make a home livable are the client, the building site, and the amount of money the client has to spend. According to this statement, to make a home livable (C. is the correct answer)

         A. the prospective piece of land makes little difference.
         B. it can be built on any piece of land.
         C. design must fit the owner's income and site.
         D. the design must fit the owner's income.
